In what was the final 2016-17 season hit out, it was Keith Blatch who came out on top in last Saturday night’s final Everyday Finance Solutions Queensland Lightning Sprints Club Championship round at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway.
While it was the former Queensland Champion who claimed the final victory of the season, current and two-time Australian Champion Kurt Wilson’s consistent performance in previous race meetings was enough for him to take out the overall Club Championship point standings for the second season running.
Lining up alongside pole-sitter Kirsty Kelly for the 15-lap feature race, Blatch managed to make the best of the start, taking over the lead on the opening lap and going on to lead for the remainder of the distance to take the win. After starting from position five, Dave Fanning gave a solid drive, with the two-time Australian Champion claiming the runner-up spot, ahead of current Queensland Champion Wayne Iacono in third.
After a battle with Iacono for the final podium place in the middle stages of the feature race, Wilson was forced to settle for fourth, after Iacono pipped him for good on lap 10, while Peter Campbell was disappointed to slip back one position from his fourth-place start to round out the top-five finishers. The remaining finishers were Bernie Clark, Andrew Sparks and Ian Galvin.
The night couldn’t have ended in a more disappointing fashion for Kelly, who slipped back to third before retiring to the infield on lap seven, due to blowing an engine, among other issues, after starting the feature race in pole position.
Fanning was the best in the earlier heat races, coming away with two wins and a third-place finish, with the remaining win going the way of Wilson, who also finished third in his final heat race. Blatch showed good consistency with two runner-up finishes.
