After a close finish, it was Kurt Wilson who continued his recent winning form to claim the victory in Friday night’s eighth Everyday Finance Solutions Queensland Club Championship round at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway.
While Kirsty Kelly gave it everything she had, she was not quite able to pip the current Australian Champion, who led the 15-lap feature race from start to finish, charging through the field from fifth to come home in the runner-up spot a mere 0.301 seconds behind Wilson.
Jason Rae backed up his recent third-place finish to score his second podium result for the 2016-17 season, ahead of American racer Ty Tilton from Lima, Ohio, and Kingaroy-based Modified Sedans driver Darren Baldwin, who made a guest appearance in Michael Gollagher’s Qld # 33 machine. Coming from a Sedan background, Baldwin became more comfortable with the Lightning Sprint as the night wore on to impressively round out the top five.
Andrew Sparks was the final finisher, with rookie Aaron Kelly, who has been one of the form drivers in recent race meetings, forced to retire from the feature race before completing a single lap, after making contact with another car which caused him to bounce into the wall and sustain too much damage to his car to continue.
Winning his opening heat race earlier in the night, Wilson backed up his result with a second-place finish in heat-race two before prematurely retiring from his final heat race due to a snapped chain link.
The remaining heat-race wins went the way of Kirsty Kelly and her younger brother Aaron Kelly, with Aaron showing good consistency to also come away with a second and third-place finish, placing him at the top of the qualifying point score. Despite being highest-points man, Aaron drew a rear of field starting position for the feature race.
For their next appearance, the Queensland Lightning Sprints will head to Archerfield Speedway to contest the ninth round of their Queensland Club Championship on the Saturday night of February 18.
