Aaron Kelly continues to go from strength to strength in his debut season in Lightning Sprints, speeding to victory last Friday night at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway in the sixth Everyday Finance Solutions Queensland Club Championship round.
Equal highest points man with two-time Australian Champion Dave Fanning heading into the 12-lap feature race, the rookie started out of position two and managed to steal the lead from Fanning out of turn two on the opening lap in his ex-Darren Salmon owned Australian Championship-winning Qld # 07 car. From there, Aaron Kelly was never headed, going on to take his maiden feature-race win in just his third race meeting in the class.
After Fanning slipped back to fifth in the early stages of what was a turbulent feature race, Aaron Kelly and his older sister Kirsty looked poised to take a 1-2 finish; however, Fanning managed to regain the runner up spot from Kirsty on the final lap, with Kirsty completing the podium in third.
Jason Rae finished just off the podium in fourth, ahead of Scott Moir (NSW), Andrew Sparks and current Australian Champion Kurt Wilson, who encountered a mechanical issue, having slipped to the rear of field from third place to finish two laps behind the leader.
Due to a range of issues, Alan Brosnan, Jason George and David Van Vegchel were unable to start the feature race.
Earlier in the night, Aaron Kelly asserted his dominance early, winning the opening heat race ahead of Fanning and Kirsty Kelly, in a preview of what was to come. Fanning was the winner in heat-race two ahead of Wilson and Aaron Kelly, with eventual winner Kelly fighting back to win the final heat race ahead of Fanning and Wilson.
For their next appearance, the Queensland Lightning Sprints will return to Archerfield Speedway on the Friday night of January 20 for the seventh Everyday Finance Solutions Queensland Club Championship ROUND.
