A strong field of Lightning Sprints will be ringing in the New Year with the $500 to Win Silver Cup at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway this Sunday night (January 1).
Doubling as the sixth Everyday Finance Solutions Queensland Club Championship round, the annual Silver Cup event has attracted a field of 15 quality competitors – including two interstate visitors.
Current Australian and NSW Champion Kurt Wilson is set to make a timely return for the Silver Cup, after spending the past month on the sidelines, due to a work-related injury. Up until his injury, Wilson was leading the Queensland Club Championship point standings (he has now dropped back to sixth) and is focused on a successful return in the Silver Cup.
Two-time Australian Champion Dave Fanning, aboard the Donny Robertson-owned Qld # 26 car, has been one of the form drivers so far this season. There’s no doubt that Fanning, who currently sits third in the Queensland Club Championship point standings, will be up there at the pointy-end of the field.
Alan Brosnan and Jason Busk have made pleasing and consistent starts to the 2016-17 season and as a result they currently sit at the top of the Queensland Club Championship point standings in first and second place respectively. Busk, guest driving in the Qld # 19 car owned by David Van Vegchel and normally driven by Sean Hill, is especially looking for a good run at the Silver Cup, following being crashed out in the second heat race of the last race meeting and it consequently brought his night to a premature end.
The likes of current Queensland Champion Keith Blatch, Kirsty Kelly and David Van Vegchel are more than capable of contending at the pointy-end of the field and that is their Silver Cup goals.
Flying the flag for the interstaters will be Scott Moir and Pete Styles. The NSW-based drivers are taking time out of their holidays to travel to the Sunshine State in order to contest the Silver Cup.
Making up the 15-car field for the Silver Cup are Jason Rae, Jason George, Andrew Sparks, teenager Aaron Kelly, David Kenway and Garry Thorne.
With the defending Silver Cup Champion Sean Iacono having moved into 410 Sprintcars this season, we’re guaranteed to see a new Silver Cup winner.
The Silver Cup format will see the drivers contest three rounds of heat races and a 20-lap feature race.
The Silver Cup will be sponsored by SpeedPartz Australia, which is offers a full range of parts and accessories for open wheel competitors. To find out more about SpeedPartz Australia, visit their website: www.speedpartzaustralia.com.au or LIKE them on Facebook by searching SpeedPartz Australia.
